I have trained dogs of all breeds and sizes. I use balanced training techniques to teach dogs new behaviors and ensure they are happy and well-trained! I graduated from a six month long course in North Carolina and received a Master Dog Trainer certification. I received awards for detection dog training. This extensive course included the training of pet dogs, service dogs, and police K9’s. We took a basic first aid course along with a course on dog nutrition.
I received an award for being the best in class when working with the detectio k9’s. These dogs were trained for the police department in North Carolina. Some of these dogs were dual purpose which means that they do bite work and detection. Most of these dogs were shepherds of some sort, and had very high drive. To earn this award I had to be the best in the class and get the highest scores on the tests. This includes having practicals, meaning you had to be able to handle any dog they assigned to you. You were expected to say all of the correct commands, and read the dogs body language so you knew when they were falsing, hitting, or there’s no odor. We also had to imprint dogs on narcotic and bomb odors. I was able to complete all of these tasks with flying colors.
I had gotten the opportunity to foster some of the service dogs that were being trained at the school I was attending. This was such an eye opening experience! The first dog I got to foster was a service dog named June. She was trained to preform service dog tasks to her future owner such as seizure response, and stability. When I took this dog home I had set rules that I had to help train June for in the house. All of the dogs that I had taken home had to have house manners. All of the service dogs I had taken home had manners out in public such as sitting when you stopped walking, heeling next to you in all situations, behaving out in public, being good with people and kids, and alerting and doing tasks when needed. When I fostered these dogs I was learning what it was like to have to take care of a service dog every day. It was a lot of work and time but it opened my eyes to what people who need a service dog have to go through every day.
